The year is 1945. The glamorous singing sensation known as “The Velvet Devil” is performing on-stage at the legendary Hippodrome in Toronto. Velvet is the epitome of style and class. But in the middle of her signature tune, strange things begin to happen—a premonition, a telegram, sad and terrible news.
Soon Velvet is on a train home, back to the Canadian prairies she fled so long ago. The reason is a funeral. But the reluctant journey opens the doors of Velvet’s memory and releases images, sounds and feelings that have been locked away for many years. Velvet’s journey through her troubled past is overlaid with sad and glorious song. It is music that matters more than anything else for Velvet. It is the thing that fulfills her and the only thing that makes her truly happy. But it comes at a price Velvet may be tragically unable to pay.
“Menard’s performance is sublimes, one that keeps you wondering where the actress ends and the fiction of the character begins… it’s a tour de force performance…”

ANDREA MENARD ("Velvet Laurent")
Defying categorization, Andrea Menard is a multi-talented Métis actor, singer/songwriter, playwright and screenwriter. She is a gifted performer who crosses culture and language boundaries by speaking from her heart.
She learned to perform from the northern lights. On the open prairie, along the river, she sang from her soul. With a voice that brings chills to the surface of your spine and an exciting talent that brings audiences to tears, Andrea Menard is simply gorgeous. Anextremely versatile, powerhouse performer, Andrea dazzles audiences on screen and stage, alone – on a bare stage singing a cappella, or accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra.
Her powerful voice is lyrical, raw and reminiscent of the jazz and blues singers of the 1940’s, yet she captures the simplicity of the great folk artists.
